Thanks to Rudolf Arnheim’s book, Art and Visual Perception: A Psychology of the Creative Eye, which is a must-have book of the 20th century. The Gestalt principles have undergone more development through the years, however, they became more prominent in 1954. ![]() If you collect together the visual elements in a visual arrangement using one of the Gestalt principles we will discuss below, your design will be more connected, coherent, and complete. ![]() What are the Gestalt principles of design? UX researchers, designers, and developers in the industry has adopted these principles and used Gestalt principles extensively to create products and designs with well-placed elements that catch the eye as a larger, whole image. Simply put, the Gestalt theory is about the mind informing what the eye sees by perceiving a series of elements as a whole. One good example of this phenomenon is movies, where there is a perception of movement.īesides Wertheimer, the development of Gestalt psychology was also influenced by these thinkers: Immanuel Kant, Ernst Mach, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This phenomenon suggests that humans perceive movements where there is none. Later, Wertheimer’s proposed the Phi phenomenon, where flashing lights in sequence can lead to apparent motion. He has a toy stroboscope that displayed photos in a rapid sequence, creating an appearance of movement. The development of Gestalt psychology began during Wertheimer’s observation at a train station. Thus, the principle of Gestalt Movement was that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. The Gestalt psychologists, however, were interested in looking at the totality of the mind and behavior. Wundt’s work is about breaking down psychological matters into their smallest parts. The first Gestalt principles originated in the work of Max Wertheimer as a response to the structuralism of Wilhelm Wundt. ‘Gestalt’ is a German word for “unified whole”. Thus, the Gestalt principle of similarity benefits visual perception, but it can provide benefits to VWM as well.The origin: What is Gestalt theory in psychology? In short, the VWM performance benefit derived from similarity was constrained by spatial proximity, such that similar items need to be near each other. Experiment 2 replicated and extended this finding by showing that similarity was only effective when the similar stimuli were proximal. Experiment 1 established the basic finding that VWM performance could benefit from grouping. Here, we investigated whether grouping by similarity benefits VWM. ![]() However, one prevalent Gestalt principle, similarity, has not been examined with regard to facilitating VWM. This introduces the question, do these perceptual benefits extend to VWM? If so, can this be an approach to enhance VWM function by optimizing the processing of information? Previous findings have demonstrated that several Gestalt principles (connectedness, common region, and spatial proximity) do facilitate VWM performance in change detection tasks (Jiang, Olson, & Chun, 2000 Woodman, Vecera, & Luck, 2003 Xu, 2002, 2006 Xu & Chun, 2007). Visual perception processing is facilitated by Gestalt principles of grouping, such as connectedness, similarity, and proximity. Visual working memory (VWM) is essential for many cognitive processes, yet it is notably limited in capacity.
